Difference between Local Recording and Cloud Recording

Local recording allows users to record a meeting video and audio to a local computer. Cloud recording allows users to record to Zoom cloud or online storage, and includes options such as audio transcription.

Please note the following:

  • Participants must be allowed to record by the Host.
  • Audio Transcription is only available on cloud recording.
  • Box is recommended for long term and archive storage for all local and cloud recorded video content.

How to record a Zoom meeting locally

Please see instructions below on how to record locally:

  1. Click the Record button on your Zoom meeting window, as you can see on the screenshot below.
  2. Select Record on this computer from the drop-down menu, as you can see on the screenshot below.
  3. After the meeting is done, you will see the message depicted in the screenshot below, which indicates the the recording file is being converted.
  4. After the Recording has been converted, you will be able to access it on your local storage. It will be saved in a folder named "Zoom" somewhere on your local storage.

If you do not see the Record button from step 1, please click the More button then select Record on this computer as you can see on the screenshot below.

While a meeting is being recorded, you may, at any point, pause it or stop it by using the little control panel at the top right of the meeting window, as you can see on the screenshot below.

How to record a Zoom meeting to the Cloud

Please see instructions below on how to record to the Cloud:

  1. Click the Record button on your Zoom meeting window, as you can see on the screenshot below.
  2. Select Record to the Cloud from the drop-down menu, as you can see on the screenshot below.
  3. After the meeting is done, your Cloud recording will take some time to process before it becomes available on your Recordings list at https://yorku.zoom.us/recording

Cloud recordings generally take about 2 times the duration recorded to process, but occasionally may take up to 24 hours due to higher processing loads at that time.

Cloud Recording is a feature that is available only to Faculty and Staff members at York University. Students (both undergrads and grads) do NOT have access to this feature. Hence, if students were to visit their Cloud Recordings list here https://yorku.zoom.us/recording, they will see the screenshot below
