Adding and Organizing Questions in your Quiz

Creating Questions within a Quiz

Creating questions directly in your quiz activity is a quick and easy way to get your quiz up and running. 2. From the quiz landing page, select Questions in the red course navigation bar
Questions option highlighted in the course navigation bar
  3. Select Add (if there are already questions in the quiz, select Add where you would like the new question to appear within the order of questions), and then select + a new question from the resulting drop-drown menu
The Add option appears at the right side of the question list area. Selecting Add opens a menu to add a new question, add from question bank, or add a random question

  4. From the pop-up menu, select the type of question you would like to add (a description of each question type then click the red Add button at the bottom of the pop-up. This will then open the page to create the question and choose question settings.
The pop-menu has question types listed in the left scrolling pane. Descriptions for the question type selected appear in the right pane.

  5. Once you've completed all fields for your question type, scroll down and click the red Save changes button to save the question and see it appear in your quiz questions list.

Creating Common Question Types

Multiple choice questions

eClass allows single answer or multiple answers for multiple choice questions. In the General section, you set up the question and assign a score. In the Answer section, you enter the list of options and corresponding feedback for each. To create a multiple choice question, complete the fields provided as follows:

General

  1. Category: Select an appropriate category in which to create the question. If you are creating questions directly in the quiz, this will be the default category for that quiz.
  2. Question name: This is visible only to the instructor and will help you identify the question when selecting questions for quizzes.
  3. Question text: This is what will appear to students as the question.
  4. Question status: Questions that marked Ready will appear to students when used in a quiz. Questions marked Draft will not appear to students or be pulled into a quiz as a random question---this status is useful if you are still editing your question.
  5. Default mark: The default mark will be the automatic value assigned to the question when used in a quiz if not otherwise modified in the quiz setup.
  6. General feedback: General feedback will appear to all students regardless of the choice they select should the quiz settings allow feedback to be viewed after the attempt.
  7. One or multiple answers?: This setting determines whether students are able to select more than one choice at a time.
  8. Shuffle the choices?: If enabled, the choices will appear in a random order for each student.
  9. Number the choices?: Choose your preferred numbering/lettering display for the choices.

Answers

  1. Choice 1: Each choice is a potential answer for the student to select.
  2. Grade: This is value awarded to the student should they select this choice (e.g., if the total value for the question is 2 marks, a student would get 2 full marks for this choice if set to 100% or only 1 mark if set to 50%).
  3. Feedback: This is the specific feedback that will appear to students who select this choice should the quiz settings allow specific feedback to be viewed.

Repeat for additional choices, then click Save changes when finished.

Essay questions

An Essay question allows a response of a file upload and/or online text. This must then be graded manually. To create an essay question, complete the fields provided as follows:

General

  6. General feedback: General feedback will appear to all students should the quiz settings allow feedback to be viewed after the attempt.

Response options

  1. Response format: Choose the formatting available for students to provide their response.
    1. HTML editor: the editing toolbar will appear for students
    2. HTML editor with file picker: the editing toolbar will appear for students and they will have an option to attach files
    3. Plain text: no editing toolbar will be available for students in the response field
    4. Plain text monospaced font: no editing toolbar will be available for students in the response field, and the font is evenly spaced to make it easier to read
    5. No online text: no response field is available for students to type an answer. If this option is selected, you must allow attachments to be uploaded
  2. Require text: This determines whether students are able to leave the response field blank
  3. Input box size: This determines how big the response field appears to students (measured in potential lines of text). If students write more lines of text than the input box size, they will need to scroll to review their response
  4. Minimum word limit: If text is required, you can enable this and set a minimum number of words the student must enter
  5. Maximum word limit: If text is required, you can enable this and set a maximum number of words the student can enter
  6. Allow attachments: Choose the number of files students are allowed to upload (you can then choose whether attachments are required or option, the file types allowed for upload, and/or the maximum file size for uploads)

Response template: You can use this field to create a template for students to add to in the response field. For example, you may want to provide a table for students to complete or an outline to prompt their responses.

Grader information: This information will not appear to students. This is information that will appear to inform feedback when grading. For example, you may want to include guiding information on how to allocate marks or a model answer.
